20 mph zones

On a lesson my pupil is driving along a road and this road has traffic calming measures (speed humps/pillows). He asks me “what is the speed limit on this road”. How do we know if we are in a 30mph road with traffic calming measures or a 20mph zone? (Please assume we did not spot the initial 20mph zone signs, if there were any!). So what clues can we expect to see to help us identify the speed limit?

Re: 20 mph zones

20 limits and 20 zones are completely different things. A 20mph limit is like any other non standard speed limit in that there must be regular repeater signs. Most 20 limit roads are inadequately signed by the authority that placed then but assuming they are correctly signed they are enforceable by police. A 20mph zone is not enforced by police but traffic calming measures are put in place to control the speed of the traffic.

It seems likely therefor that you were in a 20 zone.

Re: 20 mph zones

Hi
Generally: if there are side roads with 20 signs then the road you are on shouldn't be.

Having said that bear in mind that some local authorities don't always change signs when they change limit boundaries.
ie In Blackburn there is a 20 limit area which has been added to an earlier one and the council have failed to remove those road end signs which are now in the centre of the area

Re: 20 mph zones

Thanks for the reply's guys. As I thought a 30mph road with traffic calming measures (and obviously no repeater signs) looks exactly the same as a road in a 20mph zone!
