Automatic only

Hi Newby here just looking for advice, I have looked online but found no real answer so hope you can help...
I have an Auto only Car license but want to learn to drive a Bus /HGV is this possible or do I have to sit a manual test?
Kind regards
Darren

Re: Automatic only

I would assume that with most things it would be fine to do in an auto, you'll just have the usual restrictions post passing the test...

You can take an auto LGV/PCV test and get auto only as you have auto B

Your alternatives are -
Pass manual car (B) test then passing C or D auto will give all in manual
Pass manual C or D which will give all in manual including B
Pass B+E in manual which gives B manual so any pass in C or D auto gives all in manual

Re: Automatic only

How can you take the b+e test in a manual car with an auto only b licence held so far???.

It's one of the checks I do every day with new trailer course candidates....no manual car licence - no drive my vehicle !

Re: Automatic only

hris
Surely they'll have got B manual and B+E manual as provisional on their Bauto full licence?

Re: Automatic only

Yes - so they still need to pass the B driving test in a manual first. That step can't be missed out.

A 17 year old can't just take the b+e test initially in order to get that entitlement and miss out taking their car driving test in the first place.
If they pass the car test in an auto - they can take the b+e test, but will only be able to do this in an auto vehicle and gain a b+e auto entitlement.

That is incorrect

A driver with only B auto can take a B+E, C or D test in a manual which then gets them manual B

Anyone who thinks otherwise can contact DVSA or DVLA to confirm this as being a fact

I know my stuff on these issues !

Re: Automatic only

I stand corrected having just read the relavant legislation   roll

What a ridiculous situation. You can sit in my manual 4x4 and pull a trailer having never used a manual gearbox ever before.....but you can't sit and pass the b+e test in an auto vehicle and then tow using a manual gearbox (even though you have a manual b licence already)

The EU legislation did not cover BE so we are waiting for the UK Govt to change the law

In NI the situation is different - pass B manual then BE auto = get all in manual

Re: Automatic only

Hi
Haven't they changed the rules recently so that the larger category D for instance can be passed on automatics yet get manual licences, I heard it was because there are few, if any, manual training vehicles but they still need manual drivers for the heritage buses and the other older ones still on some fleets.
