Are forums being replaced by social media?

I notice many forums including DTT are less and less active while the likes of Facebook increasingly being used in the way that forums were, personally I think this is a bad thing in many ways as the likes of FB are ultimately there to make money and they have too much control. Look what is happening at the moment with many accounts being deleted because FB deem the user name to be too commercial, never mind what they actually do with the data they have.

The majority of content posted on facebook is garbage.  And what is useful disappears very quickly, causing the same questions to be asked over and over again.

Most of what's posted on fb is better staying on there, and although there's a lot less on this forum now at least it's sensible.

I agree, and that is one of the things I dislike about it. I just hope it doesn't kill of forums such as this which I have gained a lot from since starting my training in 2006 even now still pick up the occasional bit of advice that changes the way I think about the job or teach.

I use social media a lot but still prefer reading this forum material when it comes to info on driver training.

I find the most useful tool with regards to using forums is the fact you can "search" for topics fairly easily whereas on social media sites this is much harder to do, you may recall seeing a post on a particular topic but then it just gets "lost" in the crowd, so to speak.

There's still one particularly obnoxious ex- DTT, non ADI troll about, fortunately it only inhabits a little used ADI forum where new members  get abused.

Forums will never fully be replaced by social media. Forums are interactive in a way that social media never will be. Anyone can access FB, but for someone to join a forum it means they must be interested in that niche subject... which means they're like-minded to some degree. Forums form a community, while social media grabs what's left. Forums are more about information, FB is all about advertisements.
