New C+E auto box test

I was informed by my training centre that in late September you will be able to take a C+E test in a automatic gearbox truck and once passed this will also give you rights to drive a manual as well.

My question is does anyone have a date when this new rule comes in?

Thanks

This is still a proposal - no dates or exact details have been released yet, the weight on vehicles for test is definately coming in September.

Re: New C+E auto box test

Had a feeling this would be the case with no actual date being mentioned anywhere. I will be ready to sit the C+E in September and a autobox would be a big helping hand but i don't want to be waiting about months for something to come in, which in the end, might even not.

Only my personal opinion but I'm not sure it will happen - don't see how it can be right to gain a "manual licence" by taking a test in an automatic roll

Re: New C+E auto box test

Seems really crazy to be let loose in an lorry with a splitter or range change gear box having never driven one! Granted auto boxes seem to be becoming the norm in the industry but that is no reason to ditch the manual licence.

Lots of people past their HGV tests in vehicles which did not have range change or splitter gear boxes.

Re: New C+E auto box test

No matter what type of manual the test is passed in there will be many other manual types not covered as well as a host of autos

The principal of how a manual box works can be gained by passing a manual B test

The proposal is that if the driver already has passed a manual test in any category then all other tests will be given manual even if taken in autos

I can see the logic of this but it would need many changes in the law to allow this to happen

A cat C manual will already upgrade a cat D auto to manual
In NI a B manual passing a B+E auto gets B+E manual
