Is the fee for renewal of a photo driving licence an allowable expense?

The normal test is whether an expense is "wholly, necessarily and exclusively" required for the business.

However, it is recognised that some expenses are not exclusive and that it is legitimate to claim a proportion of the expense, e.g. my car is used 90% for business and 10% for SD & P, and my tax returns reflect this.

I also have just renewed my photocard, and I intend to claim 90% of the cost on my next return.

Anything can be claimed for , you can put thro food for your pet cat if you want and take it off your gross earnings , the proof of the pudding comes when the Hmrc investigate you and the onus is on you to prove the cat food is part of your business needs , I personally would not bet on a tax inspector believing you would not renew your driving licence if you were not an instructor ,

If you are having to claim for a driving licence renewal as a tax expense you are either a very tight sod or desperately short of money  lol

It could make a difference of £4 in my tax bill. I would certainly bend down to pick up a £5 note: if that makes me a tight sod then so be it!

Are you really advocating that we should pay more tax than is necessary? If so, I suspect you're in a very small minority. wink

Re: what expenses is allowable ?

I prefer to wear contact lenses when driving instead of my glasses.  I pay for them by direct debit on a monthly contract. Would I be able to claim them as an expense?

This statement is not correct!

If the accountant costs 350 you can claim this but which means your tax bill will be reduced by 350 x 20% = 70 Therefore  he will have cost you 280.

People seem to have a misconception that something tax deductable is is not going to cost you anything!
