Captured today with my roadhawk dc-1.   You really struggle to understand what some drivers are thinking about when you see this kind of elementary mistake.

Yes. There is no law which prevents you from photographing in any public place. Inside the school grounds would be a different matter.

RM,

Do you know the official line on recording a Role Play check test?

I would think that might be a problem as you would be capturing the examiner's voice, and you would therefore need his/her permission.  The DSA would therefore need to be informed prior to test and I can guess what the response would be.

Re: Why you should have a dash camera

VERY GOOD CPD, I would hope....

as one could assess the errors spotted by the examiner in detail and work on the ways of improving yourself s/he suggests, and at the same time re-examine the points they found good in your instruction.

For whatever reason could they object, if this was what you might have been implying?

Hi
If it was used during the check test for the purpose Peter suggests and the SE is informed that it will be deleted after the session is finished, then  it should be a v good example of CCL.

Re: Why you should have a dash camera

I have recently invested in a car camera and one of the purposes is so I can reflect better on the lesson - could I have done better?  Did I offer too much help?  Did I offer too little help?  Could I have prevented any problems?  Did I create any problems? etc...   Very good CPD but I doubt DSA would see things that way on a check test.

It won't be the examiner's decision, it will be his employers.  And there is no way it will allow it's examiners to be filmed on a role play checktest because of the problems it would cause if the decision was disputed and the filming showed the examiner to be wrong.

Re: Why you should have a dash camera

Ive never really considered a camera before and am not sure how useful it would be. I can see it would be useful in the rare event of an accident but you would have to have front and rear cameras and even then you may not see cars coming from the side hmm .

What systems do members use and recommend and what do they cost?

Re: Why you should have a dash camera

http://youtu.be/lePNr2W1Ayk
This is what happened to me the other dark wet evening on my way home from my last lesson.
Video quality is a bit poor because of weather conditions.
Followed a police car up to some traffic lights where the right lane is dedicated for turning right, the police car followed a van into the right lane and waited behind the van turning right then just as I was passing on the inside the van turned right and the police car went ahead forcing me to move over and brake.
The road markings aren't very visible in the video but they are quite clear driving along plus as can be seen in the video there is a white reflective sign on approach indicating which lane to use.
The driver obviously made no mirror checks as he moved away in right lane and to make matters worse the cop in the passenger seat noticed me and spun round to look at me and gave me a really evil stare! mad
Here is the junction. http://goo.gl/maps/CG6BF

Re: Why you should have a dash camera

I am considering a dash camera, these that are available on ebay for 19.95, that record in 2/5/15 minute segments, can anyone tell me if you need to keep restarting the camera, and say you are recording an hour lesson does that mean it will be 4 x 15 min recordings on 4 seperate files, and can these files be transfered to an ipad to use as training examples. Thanks in advance to anyone with the info.

Re: Why you should have a dash camera

The segments recorded are put into separate files on an SD card which can then be inserted into your Ipad or pc or whatever you are using and then either played back or copied.
The only drawback is that you lose about 3 seconds recording as one file ends and another one starts.
You need a 32Gb card really to get a full days recording because the unit will automatically start overwriting  the oldest files once the card is full.
I got mine from a Chinese seller on Ebay about 2 years ago, only problem I had was that the battery failed after about 15 months but found another one on Amazon for a couple of pounds.

Re: Why you should have a dash camera

When members post in-car video, it should be taken into account that it can only show a percentage of what the driver can see and "apparent" distances can be misleading. You of all should know this Wessex, after the lambasting you got over your clips.

We do not know who or what was following Kaf, so cannot comment on the justification for his decision.

Given this though, is it possible to mount a camera in a way that can include the rear view mirror in the front screen view?

Re: Why you should have a dash camera

Wessex, I choose not to criticise the driving of your pupils, please do not criticise mine or the way I run a lesson. You have no idea what was going on or what lesson or point I was teaching.

You can be a sanctimonious prat at times, with with respect, shove your views up your backside.

With that, I am done trying to be helpful. I used to enjoy the spirit of mutual help on here.

Frankly, I now cannot be arsed!.

Re: Why you should have a dash camera

In my opinion when it comes to camera's you get what you pay for.
There are loads of cheap ones on Ebay from China, some are good some are not.

I currently use a GoPro Hero2 for the front and a cheap Ebay one for the rear.
I will soon be getting the new Hero3 for the front when it comes out in UK, the specs for this camera is amazing.

Re: Why you should have a dash camera

Just thought I would let you see the way this car with driving school livery was being driven this evening.

http://youtu.be/E2fJtwb0roA

Of course I have no idea who was driving but he looked to be middle aged with a passenger and just before deciding to brake he was trying to turn off the interior light!

After pulling out behind me he then proceeded to tailgate me up to the next junction.

It has been one of those weeks for me with countless encounters with bad driving and driver attitude but this one beats them all!

I would use this camera for something else, like a bike.  The car camera that I have gives in/out recording, GPS positioning with google maps and it reacts to g-force.  So in case of anything all the data is recorded inc the g force that hit the car.

Re: Why you should have a dash camera

actually you can have more choices, there are apps that changes your smartphone into a dashcam.

It is also possible to use a dash camera for this purpose. E.g. the blackvue, dod, s.will or the gopro.

Re: Why you should have a dash camera

What we need is a special thread devoted to cams ONLY - how well they work, ease of use, pic quality, software problems etc.
I'm sure it will benefit most ADIs here.
