However some of the best sports coaches dont necessarily play themselves but still produce good players! Oh no! not coaching again!!!!!! :evil:

That's true but you are not going to tell me that someone taught the likes of George Best or Jim Clark how to kick a ball or turn a steering wheel are you?
Someone may have helped them with tactics or diet or something like that but it's the player / driver / insert what you want, who ultimately has the skill, not the coach. If the coach was so good why aren't they doing it themselves?

IN MY EYES the only real way to gain credibility is to be able to say you have done what you are assessing.
If someone was to assess me, say driving an artic, they may well have a good understanding of driving but if they have never driven an artic who are they to assess me? What if I asked 'What would you do in this situation?' or something similar, they could not really answer because they have no experience. If they can't answer the question, very little or no credibility.
