Remove D1 101 restriction?

Hi

I passed my driving test before test before January 1997 so have a D1(101) entitlement on my license.

I've recently been spending a lot of time driving a long-wheelbase 8-seat minibus, so am thinking that it might be a good time to upgrade my license to remove the 101 restriction. I've no plans right now to make use of it to driver a 16-seater, so don't have plans to take the CPC, just thought that now I'm used to driving a larger vehicle it wouldn't be a big step.

Navigating the rules seems a little complex, but I think that 1) I need to pass the 'D4' medical; 2) pass the PCV Multiple Choice (Module 1a), PCV Hazard Perception (Module 1b) and maybe the Case Study (Module 2) theory tests before taking the practical. Is this correct?

Logic would suggest that my existing restricted D1 license should mean that I don't need to apply for a D1 provisional license (my existing license should enable me to hire a 16-seater minibus for practice and the test, since I won't be driving on the test for hire or reward - and I'd rather avoid doing the test via a driving school if I can). However I've seen it suggested that isn't permitted, and that I would need to get a D1 provisional license. Can anyone point me to a definitive answer to this?

And if I do have to get a D1 provisional, would my existing D1 101 restriction remain on my license at the same time (enabling me to hire a 16-seater for practice), or be removed (meaning I couldn't)?

Thanks in advance...

You need to apply for a D1 provisional and sit all of the tests precisely the same as someone who passed after 1997.

Your D1 101 does not work as provisional D1 (vocational) as it was gained without having a medical. You need to complete the D2 D4 application process.

Re: Remove D1 101 restriction?

Had a call this morning to train someone for D1. He currently has a 101 restriction. He drives for local authority under a S. 19. So far, so good. He didn't have D1 provisional entitlement so has got in touch with DVLA regarding tge application process and medical etc.
Now the tricky bit. He's been told that when he receives his licence with D1 provisional entitlement, the 101 restriction will be removed. That leaves our man unable to drive legally under a S. 19.
As a result he has cancelled the training.
I will ring DVLA on Monday. Anyone else had a similar experience?
Seems illogical to prevent a person driving legally today, and not legal tomorrow.

As far as I am aware the D1 101 is still on the photocard licence when they get provisional D1 added. The 101 is not removed until they have passed the D1 practical test.

Which is exactly what I thought. To be fair the guy is only going off what he was told by the DVLA. It seems illogical to remove a restriction when a provisional entitlement is added. I can understand it coming off post test as its not needed.
Answers hopefully tomorrow - in writing.

Re: Remove D1 101 restriction?

Spoke to DVLA yesterday. The 101 stays on the licence during the provisional entitlement stage. On passing the D1 test it is removed from the licence. However, it remains at all times in the background until the day before your 70th birthday. This is in the event you let the D1 lapse or lose the category.
You will then defer back to D1(101).
Can I have that in writing please?

At age 70 you will need to pass the medical to retain the D1(101) and C1, also their +E, acquired rights categories.

Re: Remove D1 101 restriction?

Hello everyone

On this subject, if someone has D1 with a 101 restriction (grandfather's rights), could they take a D1+E test, without having taken a D1 test, to remove the 101 restriction?

No. It's two further tests. Medical, theory, Hazard Perception and D1 test followed by D1E.

OK, that's what I thought.

Thanks TM.
