Is there anybody out there?

I miss the heyday of this forum, I suppose everyone has migrated to FB but it just doesn't fill the shoes of a forum like DTT. I remember forums posts often descended into a slanging match but FB is a hundred times worse and I am starting to believe it's the Devil's work :-) only useful for 'fun' stuff and pointless status updates telling me when someone I know is having yet another coffee at McDonalds.

Even trying to find an interesting recent post on FB is difficult to filter out with the copious amount of manure and vile hatred that sometimes comes across never mind finding a post from several years back. I can honestly say using this forum in my early days of instructing helped shaped my instruction with the knowledge from much more experienced instructors and it's a shame any new instructors now don't have the chance.

Re: Is there anybody out there?

I've had some negative experiences on FaceBook, I don't use it.
I've finally stopped getting notifications from a close friend after her death (it was distressing at times), but I still don't like FaceBook much.

A sole-operator local driving school has a FaceBook presence, on it he rates himself & his school as 5-star, and my colleague Connie who is superior instructor with many years more experience, he rates lower.

This guy is ex-army, he got his quals through "RPC" (Recognition of Prior Competency) – but does teaching soldiers with car licences to drive jeeps & trucks make him qualified to teach novice drivers?
Connie & I have had some of his students and I’ve tested some of his, they are very poor at identifying & responding to hazards for example, and they don’t seem to project ahead when driving.
Most ADIs here teach the “what to do”, but not the “why to do it”.

Connie has over 35 years experience and specialises in disabled/rehab & special needs clients, has exceptional patience, and analyses everything she does.
The ex-army instructor is not happy that the local occupational therapists won’t use him for rehab/disabled driver training/assessing.

I wonder if I should use FB though, I'm getting on in years and have to be careful that I don't turn into a dinosaur firmly stuck in the old ways.

I joined this forum when it was owned by “Jonks” (Jon Starkey), roughly ten years ago.
It has always been great for discussion and exchange of ideas, something that FB is not equipped to do from my experience.
Yes sometimes there was slanging and sniping, but no more than I would expect on a wide-flung discussion panel.

It’s a shame that the forum isn’t utilised much any more.

Re: Is there anybody out there?

It is a shame this place has gone quiet.

It is a far more personable place than the Facebook forums.

Re: Is there anybody out there?

Yes sad to see the forum decline. I used this forum and UKDIC loads in the early days.
FB is full of crap but it is where most of my work comes from these days so still well worth having the social media presence.
I miss the regulars (Triker springs to mind) and dare a say it Geebee. Had some fair arguments/ debate with him over the years  yikes  Badger is another one that comes to mind.
Once of a day there were numerous new threads on the go and always something new to read.

Re: Is there anybody out there?

I'm still out here and do post from time to time.  I've had to leave most of the FB groups because I find them more often than not to be cybercesspits!  Admittedly sometimes I jumped before I was pushed.  However, I still have questions that I need answers for and then I come here, where there is a huge amount of knowledge and valuable opinions.  I will continue to do so as long as this forum has someone to ask.  Besides Zipper will probably be here at the turn of the next century big_smile

Re: Is there anybody out there?

I too am still checking in from time to time. It's a shame that the forum has gone quiet. I don't visit any Facebook group pages so have no idea what is going on there. I do use Facebook for the business though and it generates a lot of free business, more than I can ever handle. The reach of it is staggering. Last week I put up a video and 75,000+ people have watched it. The times they are a changing!

Time moves on, things change, not always for the better!
I wouldn't use any facebook groups for professional discussions, I was added to a couple, but left pronto!

I must say I am surprised that even this forum is still going, albeit a very quiet one, and as Evan says, things/technology moves on. Have noticed that 2pass is back again after a long absence.

We should start a revolution, bring down FB. Although I use it, it's mainly for amusing stuff but the amount of pointless rubbish is ridiculous.

Hi
FaecesBook is full of......................

Would you telephone every one of your acquaintances to tell them you are having a coffee in a paper cup? If not then don't post it either.

Re: Is there anybody out there?

It also seems that FB posters feel the need to post occasional random pictures of dogs. I am in a couple of AA related groups so don't get too much other general rubbish and 99% of posts are free of any backbiting.

But FB lacks the depth and intricacy that traditional forums have and anything interesting falls way down the black depths as it is replaced with unimportant drivel.
So a bit of time off over Easter thought I would look in my favourites and see if any of the old forums are still operating and many are not, however my user name and password were still saved to this computer and here we are, and a thought is that many will have replaced computers etc. and not have passwords saved so will never come back without going to some lengths, so perhaps some easy way of re-joining would help old forums to regenerate.  Nice to see some of the old soldiers still at it, a Happy Easter to you all.

Maz.
