What CPD Courses and Options are Available for ADIs?

Hi,

As the DSA move towards compulsary CPD - can ADIs and any other driver trainers put forward ideas for CPD courses they have done or would consider doing?

While I can understand this represents my own personal choice of CPD and everyone else's will vary depending on their wants and needs, it may give us all a chance to see what opportunities are there for us if we want to look - you never know it may help us accelerate our learning experience and save us looking back after 30+ years wondering what could have been.

I also appreciate that due to being seriously injured over 6 years ago this really only represents a small amount of CPD in 3 1/2 years with learners, advanced and fleet and 1 1/2 years in business support. So without that break for recovery my CPD may well have been different! wink

Here is a list to start with that may be good to get added to:

DSA Regd. Fleet Driver Training Register
DSA Regd. Pass Plus Trainer
RoSPA Advanced Driving Test (taken every 3 years)
RoSPA Contracted Fleet Trainer (limited opportunities)
RoSPA Diploma in Advanced Driving Instruction (taken every 3 years)

IAM Contracted Fleet Trainer (limited opportunities)
IAM 2hour Special Assessment

LGV & PCV DSA Theory Test
LGV Class C
LGV C + E
PCV D (D + E)
Motorcycle DSA Theory Test
Motorcycle Class A
DIAmond Advanced Test

Equal Opportunities Course

Scottish Qualification Centre – Coordinator Assessor/Verifier
Mind Driving Workshops – Stephen Haley
eDriving Solutions – Coaching Skills for Driving Instructors

BRAKE Charity - Workshop/Presenter’s Course
A2om/DriveiQ Pro International Affiliated Coach

RoSPA Btec Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Driving Instruction
Excelsior Train the Trainers Course

DSA ORDIT Assessment
DSA ADI & FLEET Check Tests
Btec level 4 - Tri-Coaching Partnership – Communicating Effectively
Tri-Coaching Partnership – Using Feedback for Development
Tri-Coaching Partnership – Structuring Coaching Conversations

Presentation on Expressive Driving

RoSPA Young Driver @ Work Workshop Training Day
RoSPA – SCORSA Driver Risks @ Work Seminar

Supplier Development Programme ½ day Seminars on:
        Equality and Diversity Policy
        Health and Safety Policy
        Environmental Policy
        Quality Management Policies

eDriving Solutions – Psychological Approaches to Driver Education
eDriving Solutions – Cognitive Behavioural Theory in Driver Education
West Lothian Autistic Society – Autism Awareness Course
Insight 2 Drive – The Drive to Success ADI CPD Conference Liverpool
META – Specialist Practitioner Course in Neuro Hypnotic Repatterning (incl NLP)
META – Brain Exploration – NHR and NLP
Callahan Techniques Approved TFT Certified Algorithm Practitioner

Well I did say it was a personal starting point and I appreciate I have missed quite a bit that others may have considered.

Cheers, Brian

The Diploma in driving instruction was very worthwhile, I'm about to start a diploma in psychology (Jan 2012), which I don't think was on your list.

Would also recommend C.T.L.L.S. and even a full Cert Ed. to gain a good overall teaching experience. Love the idea of the psychology diploma!

Hi,

I agree the psychology diploma sounds good too!

I have also earmarked an NLP in Education Practitioners Course as an add-on to the NHR (NLP) Course I have recently completed.

Hi,

I have completed the first of two Modules in the NLP in Education Course with the second Module due in January and it was very good.

I think Coaching, especially with NLP strategies can be very effective for yourself and the students.

Just a quicky.
Yes, Fleet Assessor Training, with Any Driver Ltd.  Just completed that one.
Today I started on ORDIT course.
Then I want to do Assessor Course

I think First Aid Course might count towards CPD, I did mine years ago, but the stuff is still relevant. wink

Re: What CPD Courses and Options are Available for ADIs?

Hello Brian and all,

What courses do you recommend for me? I have been an ADI for just over 3 years. I plan to retire in around 3 to 4 years but may do the odd few hour after that to top up my pension. I only wish to carry on teaching L drivers as that's what i enjoy. I work around 30-35 hours a week so would be free most weekends and maybe the odd day or two in the week for any CPD courses. I'm a bit reluctant to spend lots of cash as i would have no long term benifit.

Any advice appreciated.

Martin

Don't forget!

All new drivers should have professional driving lessons and disabled learner drivers may want to look for instructors who have specialist knowledge of their needs.
Look for instructors who have taken a special course - often at Banstead Mobility Centre or the Transport Research Laboratory.
Experienced instructors can teach you more than how to drive, including:
how to get in and out of the car more easily
how to get your wheelchair in and out of the car (if applicable)
how to operate any adapted controls

Re: What CPD Courses and Options are Available for ADIs?

From what Lynne Barrie was saying its looking highly unlikely compulsory CPD will happen, financially impossible for the DSA to manage.

I think they should just say on the check test "can I see your CPD folder". That would be incentive enough for a good percentage to want to have something to show if they know they WILL be asked.

Can't be done without legislation, because the checktest brief is an assessment of continued ability on an observed lesson.
And anyone could put together a CPD file.  Without the abilty to check it's authenticity it's useless.

Love using NLP/hypnotherapy techniques, but also found Further Adult Education Teaching Certificate very useful.  Recently did a TEFL course, teaching english as a second language, was brilliant for learning how to plan lessons, which I will be integrating in my teaching of driving.  Very transferable skill.

Would love to do some driving courses, but as yet been otherwise occupied house sitting in France.
